The aetiology and antimicrobial resistance of bacterial maternal infections in Sub-Saharan Africa—a systematic review and meta-analysis
This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to address the lack of data on aetiological organisms causing maternal infections in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Data from 14 papers from 2,575 women was collected from various sources. Mixed-growth, E. coli, S. aureus, Klebsiella spp., and Streptococcus spp. were common. AMR rates were highest with first-line beta-lactam antibiotics. The study highlights the need for a review of local and international empirical treatment guidelines for maternal bacterial infections in SSA.
